Your Guide to Gay East Hawaiʻi
Hawaiʻi Island is home to a vibrant queer community ready to welcome you
Hawaiʻi Island is home to a warm and welcoming LGBTQ+ community. Most places here are safe and accepting for gay travelers. While the scene may be more low-key than in larger cities, there are many queer-friendly spaces, gatherings, and community events—especially around Hilo and Puna—where authenticity and connection matter more than labels.
Queerness also has deep cultural roots in Hawaiʻi through the tradition of māhū, a respected identity that exists outside Western gender binaries and has long held a sacred place in Native Hawaiian culture. For many visitors, that blend of modern inclusivity and ancestral understanding creates a sense of ease—being able to simply show up as yourself and feel at home!
